“Hence, the Nigerian Air Force is determined to work with regulators and other stakeholders in ensuring that all operational, as well as engineering units, improve on their present safety standard.”…ABUBAKAR

The Nigerian Air Force Mobility Command says high premium has been placed on safety in maintenance activities in the force.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal S.B. Abubakar, said the decision was aimed at enhancing operational efficiency through reduction or elimination of losses caused by avoidable accidents.

Abubakar, who was represented by the Chief of Standard and Evaluation, NAF, Air Vice-Marshal John Baba, spoke on Monday during a seminar on ‘Promoting Safety Culture in Aircraft Maintenance and Armament Engineering Environment.’

He said, “According to Boeing, human error accounts for about 70 to 80 per cent of aviation accidents.

“The International Air Transport Association safety report states that 26 per cent of accidents have maintenance cause events.

“With these startling statistics, it is essential to urgently address aircraft maintenance safety issues with renewed vision and vigour.

The Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, Air Vice Marshal Mapoleon Bali, noted that safety was everybody’s business, adding that all hands must be on deck to ensure accident-free activities in Nigeria.

Bali said, “While the emphasis is on operational safety, please note that domestic and personal safety is equally important.

“We are all stakeholders in this safety business; we must see it as our responsibility to ensure our personal safety as well as the safety of our colleagues, workplaces and the environment.”
