Chelsea Midfielder, Charly Musonda Jr joins Vitesse on a season-long loan

The 22-year-old tried to impress new manager Maurizio Sarri in pre-season to earn a place in the squad. However, he barely got a look as he only had a 13-minute cameo against Perth Glory in our first friendly, to then never leave the bench. His next three games were played with Chelsea’s U21 and U23 squads, the very last being a 1-0 loss to Derby County in which he got an early shower after receiving two yellow cards.

With prospects of playing time getting rather limited at Chelsea, it was almost clear that Charly Musonda Jr would not spend the season warming our bench every few weeks and playing for the development squad until the January transfer window. Regular minutes against the pros is what he needs, and it is probably what he will get in his season-long loan move to Vitesse.

Earlier this window, Chelsea had already sent two players, goalkeeper Eduardo and defender Jake Clarke-Salter, to the Eredivisie club. Musonda’s trip will keep the Chelsea quota in Arnhem at three, which has been the minimum of Blues players loaned to the club since 2013.

It is yet another chance granted to Musonda to impress. He remains far from the stellar path he was anticipated to take on when he arrived as a very promising youth player. But some of us remain hopeful that he can squeeze his way to glory, as unlikely a prospect as that may be at this point and time of his career.
