D’banj to perform at the Global Citizen Festival six months after son’s death

Nigerian music star, D’banj, has been announced as one of the performers at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in South Africa.

The festival will take place on December 2, 2018, in Johannesburg to celebrate the life and lasting legacy of former South African President, Nelson Mandela.

D’banj’s manager, Franklin Amudo, posted a poster of the event on Instagram on Monday.

Femi Kuti, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage are the other Nigerians on the lineup.

They will join others like Jay Z, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and Cassper Nyovest.

Naomi Campbell, Sir Bob Geldof, Gayle King, Tyler Perry and Forest Whitaker will host the event and Oprah Winfrey will deliver the keynote address for the event, which serves as the culmination of Mandela 100, Global Citizen’s collaboration with the House of Mandela.

The festival aims to raise $1 billion for initiatives working to end hunger, increase access to good nutrition for adolescent girls, reduce HIV/AIDS transmission rates, advocate for quality education, provide funding for women’s health, ensure access to clean water and safe sanitation worldwide and more.

At least 50% of that sum will go towards efforts to improve the lives of women and girls around the world.

D’banj will be performing six months after the death of his 13-month-old son, Daniel Jnr, who died in a swimming accident on June 24, 2018.
