The Federal Government is working to boost the transportation sector through the production of made-in-Nigeria tricycles that would be eco-friendly.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu disclosed this when he received the Association of Tricycles Owners of Nigeria who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja on Friday.

Dr. Onu said that the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), an agency of the Ministry is carrying out research and innovation to improve the efficiency and performance of its made-in-Nigeria tricycles through the use of solar power energy.

He said the NASENI’s tricycle will meet the needs of Nigeria based on the present administration’s determination to build a self-reliant economy.

“We have the intellectual capacity to create jobs and wealth for our people and need your support in developing the capacity to attain high level of self-reliance,” the minister added.

Dr Onu praised the contribution of Tricycle Owners Association in the transportation of goods and persons across the country and promised to support them to achieve their noble goals.

He expressed his willingness to work with the body in the best interest of Nigeria.

Earlier, the National Treasurer of the Association, Mr. Ike Samuel said that the association owed a lot to the present administration for approving the association as a trade union in January 26, 2016.

He thanked the Federal Government for its various youths’ empowerment programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and curtailing social vices.

Mr Samuel assured the Minister of the readiness of the Association to partner with the Federal government and the Ministry in actualizing their noble objectives (Daily Trust)
